Everything is energy

There is nothing other than energy, and it vibrates at different rates to form different shapes, but whatever shape it creates, it is still energy.
A stone will vibrate slower than anything mobile, and the rate of vibration in mobile objects will be determined by its state of consciousness.
Energy and our Bodies

Every part of us consists of energy vibrating at different rates; the bones will be slower than the skin, the skin will be slower than the body fluids, body fluids will be slower than the gases that emanate from us (all types including heat), and consciousness will be faster than the gases.
It's stuff we learnt at school - solids, liquids, gases.
The picture above, taken using Kirlian photography, shows the radiation of energy from a hand, and is similar to one that I had taken about 30+ years ago of my own hand.

Qigong and Energy
This is relevant to both tai chi and qigong because, in both cases, we are not only trying to increase the amount of energy that we have, but also increase the amount that we are able to store within our battery, i.e. the body. By doing so, we increase our longevity.
Tai Chi and Energy
It's the same thing, but, in my view, a longer journey. There are so many other parameters to come to terms with in tai chi, and focusing on central energy is much harder when we spend a lot of time wondering which foot or arm goes where, and which direction we are meant to be moving in.
At the end of the day, it's going to work out the same, but at the beginning it is not the same.
Incidentally, there is a saying that "those who do qigong can do tai chi, but not everyone who does tai chi can do qigong".
Staying with qigong for the moment...

In qigong we are trying to sort out our body's batteries; we are trying to create the storage space, so there is more room for the energy.
If you are packing a bag for going away, and the bag is made of very thick and hard material which has very little 'give' in it, you are going to be limited as to how much you can get into that bag.
If the bag is made of flexible and expansive material, you might even get double the amount into it by comparison.
Packing a tense bag

When the walls are hard, and there's no pliability, you could equate this to tension.
When the walls are flexible and stretchy, you could equate this to relaxation - a more open and flexible cellular structure.
Our body-battery needs the latter ability/potential; we need the cell walls to be flexible and loose, with the properties of a fishing net that can open to double its size, if not more.
Energy and Consciousness/Awareness
Anything that has energy (which is everything) has potential.
It might be obvious, but when a battery fills with energy, you increase the potential of that battery.
Unlike the example of the battery, which has limited storage, we can accumulate more energy. That 'excess' energy has to go somewhere, and in the case of humans (and perhaps animals... I don't see why not), that energy then begins to move outside the confines of the body.
This therefore begins to impact upon how we connect to the planet and to the rest of life, by which I mean anything that is living. Our relationship to everything alters.
The more esoteric side of things

This is a vast subject which links with many things, including various types of energy healing, including Qigong healing; it is about our ability as humans to sense outside ourselves, (some might call it a '6th sense'), and our connection to the universe and everything within it.
Changing your perspective
Going back to the original premise, 'Everything is energy', if, as you sit there reading this, you are aware of the idea that you are energy; some of it is solidified, some of it liquified, and some of it is gaseous.
You are then aware that absolutely everything around you, that you can see and touch, is exactly the same, and is just energy in its many varied shapes and forms. If you are then aware of the concept that 'like attracts like', you may start to feel as though you are a part of a great 'wholeness', where the 'whole is greater than the sum of its parts'.
Wikipedia's definition of Energy
Quantitative property of a physical system, recognisable in the performance of work and in the form of heat and light.
Energy is the quantitative property that is transferred to a body or to a physical system, recognisable in the performance of work and in the form of heat and light.
Energy is a conserved quantity—the law of conservation of energy states that energy can be converted in form, but not created or destroyed.
The unit of measurement for energy in the International System of Units is the joule.
Forms of energy include:
the kinetic energy of a moving object,
the potential energy stored by an object,
the elastic energy stored in a solid object,
chemical energy associated with chemical reactions,
the radiant energy carried by electromagnetic radiation,
the internal energy contained within a thermodynamic system,
and rest energy associated with an object's rest mass.
