Energy - Sensing It & Using It

3 min read

Energy is there all the time, but not everyone knows how to feel it.

If you wish to, you can develop your ability to sense or feel it, and you can also increase your own personal energy supply.

This is one of the roles of such practices as Qigong.

Sensing Energy

Central line

Your ability to sense energy is useful but can also be a slight burden if you don't know how to protect yourself.

For example, it's very useful if you want to be a healer, because you can place your hands on someone and feel where their problem(s) might lie, and therefore where to massage, needle, help to release etc.

However, I have known several healers who have given too much of themselves (and their energy) and who's health has deteriorated whilst their patients recovered remarkably well.

Using Your Own Energy

If you put your own energy into a painful area in another person, you need to be aware that you are giving away your own energy, potentially draining yourself.

It's replenishable, but you might feel tired for a while.

We are Like Batteries

Balance

It's a little like replacing only one out of two discharged batteries, without changing one of the discharged batteries. The discharged battery will partially drain the new battery.

This is where healing arts like Reiki come in, because you are then using 'universal' energy, or energy outside yourself, to do the job.

Gentle push on shoulder

Incidentally, this also applies to 'mental' energy, (for want of a better way of explaining it); you become much more sensitive to the way in which another person is feeling, and when they are upset or depressed, you can end up 'over-sympathising' and giving a lot of your own energy away so that you end up feeling drained.

Tai Chi & Qigong

That is practices such as Tai Chi, and in particular Qigong, are so useful. You learn how to build up or replenish your own energy, and you also learn how to protect yourself from being drained both emotionally and, from a physical perspective, energetically.

Standing Qigong (Zhan Zhuang)

Excessive push

I have done many different types of qigong over many years, and have found that, for me, Zhan Zhuang is one of the most powerful for building your energy.

I don't plan to go into this in this blog, but it is very worthwhile exploring it if you would like both to increase your available energy, and also if you would like to heal your body internally.

This book, by one of my teachers, demonstrates some of the postures, and has some good explanations.

A Note on Energy and Kirlian Photography

Don't push as hard as this

Kirlian photography is a set of contact-print photographic techniques used to capture electrical corona discharges (a glow around objects) produced by a high-voltage setup.

Put another way, it is able to photograph the energy field that emanates from objects.

It was very fashionable in the 1980s and probably later, and I had several photos taken of my own hands surrounded by an aura.

I don't read too much into this, but it is interesting nevertheless.

Despite its intriguing applications, there is no solid scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of Kirlian photography for diagnosing diseases or accurately depicting auras (how we love our scientific proof!). The scientific community largely views the claims associated with Kirlian photography as unsubstantiated, and yet does not dismiss them entirely.

Bear in mind that the above is only my own understanding of how we work energetically, and should not to be taken as gospel.  There is a lot of material to read both in books and on the internet; it's just a personal opinion, but, if you are reading information on the internet, definitely question the validity.
