| COURSE with Master Huang Ping on Saturday 17th October: The 13 Principles Form (continuation) PREPARATION FOR THE COURSE (for those who missed the 1st one): If you would like to come to this course, but were unable to come to the one in May, the '1st-Saturday-of-the-month' classes in AUGUST, SEPTEMBER, & OCTOBER will be used to prepare for the course on 17th October. The aim will be to work on the detail of the movements including understanding the differing functions of the 13 Principles. The course will not be open to either beginners or to those who do not know the Form - so that Huang Ping is able to concentrate on the detail and understanding of the movements. The 13 Principles Form was created during the last 20 years by the Martial Arts Association in China as a way of teaching the 8 'energies' and 5 'directions' of taijiquan. The 8 energies are Peng, Lu, Ji, An, Cai (Tsai), Lie (Lieh), Zhou & Kao, and the 5 directions are Forward, Backward, Left, Right, and Centre. Master Huang Ping was born in Yunnan Province, China and trained in Wushu from the age of nine. She has won gold and silver medals in national and international competitions and became a First Rank coach in China and for the Burmese National Team. She teaches many forms and styles of Chinese Martial Arts at all levels and abilities. Course Details

| PUSHING HANDS & APPLICATIONS The "Taiji Pushing Hands & Applications" class on Wednesday evenings (7.05pm) at The Drill Hall looks at the 'other side of t'ai chi'. There are no solo Forms involved; instead the course will concentrate on Pushing Hands (various types including Da Lu), Fa-Jing techniques, Sensitivity exercises, & Applications, but we will also be making a start on the San Shou (2-person applications set). In particular, we will be looking at the sensing of energy movement in a partner, and the skill of 'following'. Anyone already enrolled on another Taiji course need only pay 50% of the course fee. |
|
| Lunchtime class in East Finchley There is a Wednesday lunchtime class in East Finchley based at the Finchley Youth Theatre (close to Hampstead, Highgate, Muswell Hill). | BEGINNERS CLASSES The 1st class of all the Beginners courses is a 'Trial Session'. In this class there will be an explanation of what taiji is, as well as the various reasons for doing it. It is also the class in which we start to learn the Taiji Form, and is therefore worth attending, even if you think that you know why you would like to learn taiji. This class can be paid for as a 'one-off'. |
|
| BOOKING Re. booking, there are a couple of options: 1) If you would like to enrol for only the trial session (i.e. the 1st class of the course), please send a cheque for £5 to the address below. 2) If you know that you would definitely like to do the entire course, please send a cheque for the full amount to the address below; this will guarantee you a place. Cheques should be made out to 'Taiji Ltd.', and should be sent to: Taiji Ltd. (bookings) 55 Huntingdon Road, East Finchley, London N2 9DX. On the back of the cheque please write (1) your name (including first name), (2) your email address, and (3) which class you'd like to attend. Then I'll be able to email you a receipt, and get you on the right class list. If you're able to help by putting up an A4 poster at work, please let me know - it's on a Word document, so it's not a huge file. |

| NEW BOOK: "Taiji Jian 32-Posture Sword Form" by James Drewe The Sword Form is an important aspect of the popular Chinese martial art, Tàijíquan. The 32-Posture Sword Form, from the point of view of the physical movements only, is not complex, but there is a significant amount of other information relating to the applications that is open to interpretation. Written by an experienced teacher of Tàijíquan, this book provides a detailed description of the Jian (the sword), its parts and how it should be held. Using photographs and illustrations, the author gives step-by-step instructions for the main 13 applications including sword strokes, stances and footwork techniques. This book contains a wealth of information on Sword Form technique and is an ideal resource for students of martial arts, experienced practitioners or anyone interested in learning about Tàijíquan. Paperback, ISBN: 978-1-84819-011-5, 254mm x 177.8mm / 10in x 7in, 224pp, 2009, £14.99, $24.95 |

| DVD by Simon Watson There is an excellent DVD by Simon Watson on the market. This is not the usual 'forms' DVD, but is about understanding 12 individual postures from the t'ai chi forms, many of which are common to other styles of t'ai chi. The DVD shows in detail how to perform the movements correctly (from many different angles), and in addition demonstrates some applications. The quality is excellent, and the entire DVD is very clear and well-presented in its instructions, with information that you rarely find outside a class, and rarely on recorded material. For DVD Extracts: Click Here If you are interested in a copy of this extremely well-produced DVD, which is 3.5 hours long, I have a number of copies that I am selling for the reduced price of £15 (+p&p if applicable). The usual price is £19.99. |
